3rd Grade Update for October 24

Grammar Students just finished writing and publishing a piece about giving directions to make a sandwich. Next unit: Nouns

Reading Practice:

• Pablo Picasso – Created a timeline of his life & work
• Book Project – Paper mache animal, modeled after Picasso’s works
• Reading Goals – To understand our story, and read with expression and good speed and phrasing 

Both groups are working on identifying the elements of plot within a story:

1. Introduction – Main characters are introduced, as well as the conflict/struggle of the story
2. Complications – The events that take place throughout the story as the main characters tries to find solutions to the conflict (also known as the rising action)
3. Climax – When the conflict reaches a solution (the turning point of the story)
4. Resolution - The author describes the actions/feelings of the characters now that the conflict is resolved

Panda Power

• Grammar Nouns – proper nouns, special nouns, confusing nouns (we will be wrapping up the chapter by the end of next week)
• Reading We are developing our summary writing skills. Current story – “Amelia Earhart”

Dino Dogs

• Grammar – Verbs – action verbs and linking verbs, making sure that our verbs agree with the subject of the sentence
• Reading – Just finished “Artic Explorer: The story of Matthew Hensen”; New story – “Nachito’s Teachings”

5th/6th Grade Update for October 24:

Current Reading Unit- Johnny Tremain (historical fiction novel, by Esther Forbes, detailing some of the events that took place during the Revolutionary War)

• Students are in the final chapters of this book
• We will be working on book reports in class, starting on Wednesday, the 29th. Some work will be required to be completed at home. Book reports are due on Friday, the 31st.
• Book project – Research your genealogy. Complete and design a family tree for your family, dating back at least four generations. Final project due to class, November 13. Enjoy!
